Your computer is preventing this page from displaying properly.Hat WinesShelmerdine Hat manufacturing posterThe Hat pays tribute to the history of the Shelmerdine Family from their beginnings as Hat manufacturers at the Shelmerdine & Sons Hat Works in Stockport, Manchester in 1802 to establishing Australia's first felt hat factory in Collingwood in 1876. Anticipating the post-WWII decline in demand for hats, the family sought other enterprises, and in 1969 Ross Shelmerdine OBE CMG (1921-1979) co-founded Mitchelton along with architect Robin Boyd and legendary winemaker Colin Preece. In 1994 Petaluma Ltd purchased Mitchelton enabling increased investment and growth, and in 2001 Mitchelton was acquired by Lion Nathan Ltd. In that same year the Shelmerdine family celebrated 125 years in Victoria, and in 2002 after exiting the company the family embarked on Shelmerdine Vineyards. In keeping with its hatting traditions and its love of Melbourne, the Hat Wines have been created to pay homage to those things that make the city unique – laneway bars, hidden retail treasures street posters, music and enjoying a drink with friends.
